Glipizide GITS
Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet & exercise to improve glycemic control in adults w/ type 2 DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initial Dose: 5 mg daily. Dosage adjustments may be in increments of 2.5 or 5 mg as determined by blood glucose response. Max: 20 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ breakfast. Swallow whole w/ sufficient amount of liqd, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe renal & hepatic insufficiency, type I DM, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic coma.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ G6PD deficiency. Monitor patients experiencing severe hypoglycemia. Loss of control of blood glucose. Blood glucose should be monitored periodically. Renal or hepatic impairment, GI disease. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, tremor, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, epigastric discomfort, vomiting, leucopenia, hypoglycemia, pruritus, urticaria, allergic dermatitis, mucocutaneous & maculopapular rash, non-acute porphyria, malaise, cholestatic jaundice, toxic hepatitis, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, pancytopenia, visual impairment, blurred vision, reduced visual acuity, confusional state, increased AST, blood alkaline phosphatase, blood creatinine, blood LDH & blood urea. Disulfiram-like reactions have been reported w/ sulfonylureas.
Drug Interactions
Miconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole, NSAIDs, salicylates, alcohol, β-blocker, ACE inhibitor, H2-receptor antagonists, phenothiazines, corticosteroids, sympathomimetics (terbutaline, salbutamol, ritodrine).
